GLENDALE, AZ—As the 2008 Arizona Cardinals began to pack it up on a season in which they fell just short of winning the Super Bowl, one player, rookie cornerback Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie, expressed particular regret on one of the game’s closing plays, namely Santonio Holmes’ spectacular tiptoe game-winning TD catch in the corner of the end zone in triple coverage with under a minute to go.
“Look, I hate to be ‘that guy’ but, seriously, I did tell [Defensive coordinator] Clancy Pendergast to quadruple-cover Santonio Holmes. I was like, ‘Coach, I got a bad feeling about Holmes right now, we should put four, maybe five guys on him,’ and coach was all like ‘Dominique, triple coverage should be more than enough.’ So, you know, whatever.”
Rodgers-Cromartie further expressed to SSNN dissatisfaction with the defensive coaches in their ploy to give Santonio Holmes only three times the number of normal defensive players.
“Look, I hate to call out the coaching staff on this one, but in that situation, you’ve got to put at least four on Santonio. The guys a big playmaker, and triple-coverage just won’t get the job done. I’m just sayin’.
“I mean, the guy had just let a sure touchdown fly through his hands on the previous play, so he was obvy due for a big play right after,” reasoned the corner who had dropped two interceptions earlier in the game.
Despite Rodgers-Cromartie’s protestations, conventional football wisdom states that anything greater than double coverage on a receiver is a dangerous move as it gives the opposing team more room to formulate a play and potentially leaves other receivers open
“Look, all I know is if we quad-or-quid-cover Holmes, we’d be world champs,” concluded Rodgers-Cromartie. “That’s all.”
