MINNEAPOLIS, MN–Justin Morneau’s teammates didn’t call him to wish him a happy Boxing Day, and he is pissed off.
“I spent the whole morning waiting for my mobile phone to buzz,” Morneau said. “Nothing. No calls, no texts. I hope whatever the hell Joe Mauer is buying at Banana Republic is more important than our friendship, because that’s basically what he’s saying to me with this affront. Colour me furious.”
Boxing Day, which is on Dec. 26, is a holiday celebrated in Canada, the United Kingdom, Australia, and other places in the Commonwealth of Nations. Originally it was a day designed for the wealthy to give back to the poor, but now the holiday has a very strong commercial aspect, with many stores offer Boxing Day promotions. Morneau, who is Canadian, celebrates the holiday religiously.
“I am outraged at the insensitivity of my so-called friends,” Morneau said. “Torii Hunter calls me every year on Boxing Day, and has continued to do so. And yet Carlos Gomez suddenly can’t find my number? Do you know how many times I drove him in this year?”
Morneau said this is one of a string of events that makes him realize that his teammates and friends are not as loyal as he might have otherwise thought.
“First there was that whole MySpace deal, and now this,” Morneau said. “It should be an honour for these clowns to give me a bell on Boxing Day. But, no they are too selfish. So, fine. Let’s just make sure we don’t shed any tears when I don’t call Ron Gardenhire on Flag Day, okay?”

It’s going to be tough for this sport to sweep any nations, but it’s still pretty frickin’ cool!
