PHILADELPHIA, PA — According to members of his family, Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Donovan McNabb continues to be a stringent follower of the family’s ten dollar limit in their yearly Christmas gift exchange, much to the dismay of his relatives.
“It’s nothing new, but somehow it surprises us every year,” older brother Sean McNabb said of his brother’s frugality. “Yeah, we have the rule in place, but it’s mostly to try to keep people from having to get into competitions over who buys the best gift — you know, to keep people from really breaking the bank. But that’s not really going to be a problem for Donovan, so I don’t think anyone would be too upset if he broke the limit a little.”
Unfortunately, McNabb’s family isn’t sure how to present the issue to him without seeming to insult him or question his generosity.
“Donovan has always been a sweetheart, and he’s never hesitated to spend money on us,” the QB’s mother, Wilma McNabb, told SSNN. “This whole gift exchange thing is just silly – for some of the cousins it’s a thing where we don’t want them to be overspending for little holiday gifts. We don’t want to really change the rule, but it seems rude when Donovan is giving out potholders and Eagles t-shirts at Christmas time.”
One of McNabb’s cousins, who was unwilling to be quoted on the record and spoke on condition of anonymity, told SSNN that each year more than half of the extended family members end up exceeding the ten dollar limit by a buck or two. Donovan has apparently never done so, which is a source of pride for him.
“Hell no, I don’t break that limit. I take special care not to break it,” McNabb said. “Without rules like this, things go completely haywire. And if you don’t know the rules, you can end up in a lot of trouble – I had that message reinforced the hard way this season.
“I’m gonna really try to apply that sort of thinking in every facet of my life, and this ten-dollar gift limit is a place where it’s always come natural to me. I just hope my cousins like Eagles gear, because it’s getting tougher and tougher to actually buy anything for that cheap.”
