LAS VEGAS, NV — Jim Lampley, freaking out with excitement today, has spent at least two of the last three hours shadowboxing in front of a mirror in his hotel room at the Mandalay Bay Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas, SSNN has learned.
“I woke up this morning and I was so freaking excited about boxing, that I just found myself sort of bobbing and weaving in front of the mirror,” Lampley said. “And I was having some fun, I was up on my toes, my feet were moving, I started doing that weird breathing thing. Next thing you know I’m stripped down to my shorts and I’m just really going at it, pouring sweat, just really kicking my own ass in the mirror. It was awesome.”
Lampley followed up his shadow-boxing session by calling downstairs and asking for a jump rope.
“I was having so much fun, that I decided to do a little jump rope,” Lampley said. “You know, keep the footwork going, keep the heart rate up. I was doing all the different things, the running in place, the scissor step, some cross-overs, that sort of stuff. It was really great.”
Lampley said his boxing inspired workout was going so well that he decided to do some roadwork next, and went for a six-mile run, but it’s when he returned to the hotel that things really got weird.
“I walked into one of the empty conference rooms,” said Michael Martinez, 21, a bellhop at the hotel. “There’s Jim Lampley standing there in his underwear, on a scale, with both of his arms up, flexing his muscles. It was pretty weird. Just this old dude, standing alone in a room in his underwear, wearing his underwear only, flexing.”
The weirdness did not stop there, however. After Martinez told Lampley he had to get dressed and go up to his room, Lampley did so, but only for a moment. Minutes later he emerged in the casino wearing a silk robe and boxing gloves.
“I’m sitting there playing blackjack and all of a sudden the old dude from the Olympics is down there with a shitload of Vaseline all over his face,” said Meghan Carter, 29, who is in Vegas for a conference next week. “I go, ‘Ewww, gross,’ and then he spit a bunch of bloody saliva into a bucket and yelled, ‘I can beat this guy! I fucking own him!’ Nasty.”
Lampley went back to his room and retired for a three-hour nap, and was reached by SSNN afterward.
“I dunno,” Lampley said. “I’m freaking euphoric today. Today is the best day of my life, by far. I mean, the days my kids were born, they were great. But De La Hoya and Pacman didn’t fight on that day, did they?”
