WASHINGTON, DC — Barack Obama loves basketball; this much has been well-documented.
What has not yet been made public is Washington, DC’s newest resident’s plans for basketball in the nation’s capital.
“I personally feel that it would be a great thing to bring an NBA basketball team to Washington DC,” Obama said. “Washington DC is the nation’s capital, it deserves to have an NBA basketball team.”
Obama said that, as President, he’d go to a few games a year, at his own expense, and that this would do wonders to raise the profile of an NBA team.
“I think a team here could be successful,” Obama said. “Ever since the Bullets left, there’s been a real vaccuum of basketball in the nation’s capital, and I think that it’s time to change all of that. I’d like to see the NBA expand and include a team in this area of the country.”
Obama indicated that placing a team in DC would require a lot of coordination and outside assistance.
“You just can’t jam a team in here,” Obama said. “It’d have to be a coordinated effort. David Stern would have to be intricately involved. It might even be helpful to get a major NBA personality, like a Michael Jordan-type, to be involved with the team, to really gain it some interest and traction. Not Michael Jordan himself, obviously, since he knows nothing about running a basketball team, but someone like him would be good.”
The timing is not right yet, Obama said, but it’s something he’ll be watching.
“Oh, no way, definitely not right now,” Obama said. “Washington DC is nowhere close to being ready for an NBA team. Not even close. Even though there is an awful lot of crime here.”
