Florida Gators remove Detroit Lions from 2009 schedule due to BCS concerns

GAINESVILLE, FL — The Florida Gators have called the Detroit Lions and informed them that they will be cancelling next year’s proposed game, which was to be played at a neutral site in the Washington D.C. area next August. “This year we’ve seen more than ever that the BCS is a complicated and important system, and that the teams that we play must be the best challenges that we can muster,” said Florida coach Urban Meyer. “We are, unfortunately, afraid that the BCS-damage that will come from a game against the Detroit Lions — even when we win 77-3 — will be too much to overcome.” The Lions were disappointed in the decision. “As you know, we stood to get $1 million from this game, win or lose,” said Lions owner William Clay Ford.
