DUBLIN, OH — Accountant Greg Garland is on cloud nine today after an amazing turn of events last night when he was out to dinner with his wife Barbara and their four children.
The Garland family had gone to TGIFridays for dinner, as is their custom on Thursday nights. The meal went basically as normal, until Garland looked over and realized that Danny Fortson was sitting a few tables down.
“Well, I’ll tell you, I just turned into a puddle,” Garland said. “A big ole sloppy mess. I just freaked out. I went over to him, and I gotta be honest, I don’t even remember what I said.”
“I remember what he said,” said Barbara Garland. “He said, ‘Oh my God, I love you so much, you’re my favorite person in the world. I was standing there. With our four girls, under the age of 12 years old. And he told a basketball player, whose name was not Kobe Bryant, Michael Jordan, or Lebron James, that he was his favorite person in the world.”
Greg Garland says that he knows his wife is pissed, but he doesn’t really care, because Danny Fortson has always been one of his favorite players in the whole freaking world.
“I saw him, and I just flipped, and all I knew was that I wanted to get his autograph,” Garland said. “But I didn’t have my basketball cards with me or any of my Bearcats jerseys or anything like that. So I just whipped out a pen and asked him if he would sign my shirt.”
The shirt was an blue, button-down oxford shirt that Garland’s daughters purchased for him for his birthday last year. Garland untucked the shirt and thrust it toward Fortson.
“I honestly couldn’t believe it,” Barbara Garland said. “In front of our four girls, he takes off his shirt that we got him for 48 dollars for his birthday, his freaking Donald J. Trump oxford shirt, and he gives it to this guy to sign it, like he’s a six year old. We’ll be having a talk tomorrow.”
Greg Garland was insistent that his behavior was normal.
“You see Danny Freaking Fortson eating in a TGIFridays, you ask him for his autograph,” Garland said. “That’s just what you do.”
For his part, Fortson was very demure about the whole event.
“It was a bit weird, I guess,” Fortson said. “I don’t get that many autograph requests. But the best part was that after the waitstaff at the TGIFridays recognized me, they gave me a free piece of blueberry pie. So it was a pretty good night, wouldn’t you say?”
