6-1 Hawks move up in Atlanta basketball power rankings

ATLANTA, GA — Off to an amazing 6-1 start, the Atlanta Hawks were thrilled to see that they’ve moved up to the third spot in this week’s Atlanta basketball power rankings.

After the Hawks got out to a 6-0 start, they lost a 103-102 thriller to the Celtics Wednesday. Many felt that they would tumble in the power rankings released Wednesday, but instead they found themselves sitting pretty at number three, behind the South Atlanta High School Hornets and the Parker Elementary School Wildcats, who are off to their own 6-1 start.

“It was really close between the Parker team and the Hawks,” said Atlanta Journal-Constitution writer James Montgomery III. “We talked about it for like a half hour. In the end we decided that if they played 50 times, Parker would probably win about 27 or 28, so they should be ranked higher.”

The Hawks didn’t seem to mind.

“We’ve never been as high as three in a power ranking before, at least not as long as I can remember,” said power forward Al Horford. “I think a few years before I got there, they got up to sixth or seventh, when Dominique [Wilkins] was here. But we’re right there, now. I easily think we can beat Parker, if we get a game with them. We may not be at South Atlanta’s level yet, but hey, we’re a young team. We’ve got time.”
