Londoners have absolutely no clue what happened in last 20 seconds of NFL game

LONDON, ENGLAND—American football may have gained more than a few fans this past weekend with the Chargers-Saints matchup at Wembley Stadium in London. The game was well-received by fans on both sides of the Atlantic, with many noting the two high-powered offenses and spectacular playmaking in a Saints 37-32 victory. What was not as well-received on the far side of the pond was the last 20 seconds of regulation in which Drew Brees ran out of his own end zone for a safety, giving the Chargers back the ball with enough time to attempt a failed Hail Mary, a series of events that, according to the consensus of the British “made no fucking sense at all.”

“I was following the game just fine till the Saints’ quarterback ran into his own goal [sic]. And then they kicked it back but not they way they usually do…and then the Chargers got the ball back…I really don’t know what they were playing at to be honest,” resident Jack Charret told SSNN.

While the Saints’ unorthodox approach to the closing moments of the game may have surprised American fans, British fans appear to have completely left out to dry.

“I thought this game was pretty cool till that wank shite at the end there,” commented a man wearing a Ricky Williams jersey. “That was a load of straight bullocks, mate.”

When told of England’s collective reaction, Saints coach Sean Payton admitted he may have confused some new fans.

“Ok, ok, maybe we crossed the line with the whole intentional safety thing. That might have been a bit much for a first-timer to handle. Still, I would’ve thought they would have been a little amused instead of angry and confused,” Payton said.

“Wait, so the Saints guy did an own goal thing?” a clearly perplexed fan commented to SSNN. “But wouldn’t that be a touchdown? Why did the Chargers only get two points? I mean, I thought touchdowns were six and field goalies [sic] were three. Where the hell did two come from?”

Despite not having even a basic idea of what transpired, the Brits were more than happy to voice their displeasure with the final plays of the game.

“Ok, seriously, two? The guy scored on his own goal [sic]. If a Chargers’ player does it it’s six, but when the Saints do it it’s two? Hello??” an angry Brit roared. “Don’t give me that ‘strategy’ piss. He scored a touchdown for the wrong team! Period!”

“What if he kicked it through the posts?” demanded Mark Connwell, wearing a Randy Moss jersey and a Jets hat. “Would that have been one point? 2 is 1/3 6 so, therefore 1 is a 1/3 of three. That’s how it works, innit?”

At press time, all attempts to explain the concept of safeties to various Britons have failed.

“I hope that guy gets fired,” announced London resident Benjamin Carrol. “He tried to throw the match to the Chargers when he thought no one was looking. Lucky for his team, apparently they don’t penalize you for doing that sort of thing. I gotta tell you, I almost stormed the pitch.”
