CHICAGO, IL — After a hard fought American League Divisoin series, Harold Reynolds has reluctantly accepted the reality that’s he’s out of the playoffs.
As the visiting Tampa Bay Rays celebrated on the field, Reynolds was left to wonder what could have been.
“I just didn’t have it this year,” Reynolds said. “Let’s be honest, I was as shocked as anyone, that I made it this far, after the offseason I had, but I thought once I was here, the ending would be different.”
When asked what he would of done differently, Reynolds gave pause, and then confused all that were in attendance.
“Differently? I don’t know that I would of done anything differently. I mean, you gotta get that all important 4th run, so that you take the grand slam out of play. The four run lead is what every plays for, because you have to take the grand slam out of play. Did that answer the question? I guess I would like to close with, you’ve gotta take that grand slam out of play.”
Reynolds then walked off the podium and embraced broadcast partner, Don Orsillo. They exchanged brief pleasantries, before Reynolds left for the airport.
Reynolds departure from the playoffs this year comes on the heels of his epic collapse in 2006. After having a commanding position all season, he fell apart down the stretch, and failed to make the post season. Many had written off the former wunderkind, but after making the playoffs this season, the expectations began to mount for the former star.
While Reynolds was obviously saddened, he is looking forward to the future.
“I’m just really excited about next season,” Reynolds said. “There’s always hope, you know. You wake up every day and you think, maybe today is the day that I’m going to make it to the next round. Not just in the playoffs, you know, but in life. It’s like a four-run lead; sometimes you have it and sometimes you don’t. But you know when you have it, that it’s huge. Four runs, you know, that’s really the key. Wow.”
