CHICAGO - Cubs pitcher Carlos Zambrano informed teammates Tuesday at practice that he “totally would’ve voted against the bailout” that failed to pass the House of Representatives on Monday.
“Carlos came in today and all he could talk about was the bailout, and if he was a Congressman, he would totally vote against it, and here’s why,” said first baseman Derrek Lee. “None of us are really that into politics, so we were all like, ‘Okay, Carlos, now you want to talk about the Dodgers?’”
Nevertheless, Zambrano was not dissuaded by his teammates’ slow-taking on the political front.
“This is why they did not take any action in Washington, DC,” Zambrano said. “Because people are too concerned about winning elections to be worried about the future of this country. It’s despicable, really.”
“I’m not sure what the hell he’s talking about,” said Alfonso Soriano. “I’m not running for any election; I’m running for winning a baseball game today. I’m pretty sure that Carlos isn’t running for election either.”
Zambrano said Soriano proved his point.
“That’s right, I’m not running for office,” Zambrano said. “But that’s not because the people don’t need me. The people need straight talk, and that’s what I’m going to give them. They don’t need a $700 billion bailout plan that benefits Wall Street and forgets about Main Street.”
