Miami Hurricanes sort of thinking about maybe talking about potentially changing their team name

MIAMI, FL — Days after Hurricane Ike wrecked the Gulf Coast and with months still remaining in hurricane season, the University of Miami Hurricanes are thinking that now might be a good time to reconsider their team name.

“We’re just thinking that now might be a decent time to maybe consider changing our team name,” said campus spokesman Jaime Sanchez. “We want to have an intimidating team name, for sure. But we don’t want a team name that makes people think, ‘Oh, shit, I better go get some plywood.’”

Sanchez said the U has received no complaints about the name, but he stated that preparedness is key.

“You’ve got to be prepared when in comes to all things Hurricane-related,” Sanchez said. “That doesn’t just mean bottled water. That means athletic team names as well.”

There is no indication as to what the team name will be, though early reports indicate that “La Migra de Miami” will be the choice, to highlight south Florida’s large population of illegal immigrants. As yet, though, no decision has been made to change the team name, even though many are in favor.

Sanchez indicated that if the university was naming the team for the first time today, they probably would not choose a team name linked inextricably with death and despair for millions of Americans.

“I don’t think that, if we were naming a team today, we’d name it the Miami President Bushes,” Sanchez said. “Do you take my point?”

It’s going to be tough for this sport to sweep any nations, but it’s still pretty frickin’ cool!
