CAMBRIDGE, MA — Lifelong Boston resident and die-hard Patriots fan Patrick O’Callaghan erupted in a fit of fury Sunday afternoon, after watching beloved Pats quarterback Tom Brady go down with a severe knee injury as the result of a low, potentially dirty hit from Kansas City Chiefs defensive back Bernard Pollard.
“I was so furious, I was so frickin’ furious,” O’Callaghan said. “I looked around the room to see what we there that I could take out my frustration on. Then I saw John [roommate John Davidson] sitting there in his stupid Christian Okoye Chiefs jersey. I don’t know what came over me, but I just dove at his knees.”
O’Callaghan connected directly and Davidson’s knees buckled. Davidson immediately began to scream and wail in pain.
“I was like, ‘Oh shit, what did I do?’” O’Callaghan said. “Then I realized that we probably needed to take him to the hospital. Sure enough, it turned out that he has a torn ACL, and had to have a lot of surgery and will be on crutches for the next few months.”
Davidson, 24, who hails from just north of Kansas City, in Liberty, Mo., is in Boston to attend one of Boston University’s evening programs, and met O’Callaghan through Craigslist. The two have been living together for approximately three weeks. Because he has not yet enrolled in school, he does not have health insurance.
“Later on I realized that John probably didn’t have anything to do with Brady’s knee getting wrecked, you know what I mean?” O’Callaghan said. “But in the moment, if you were there, you’d totally understand. I was so mad, and I was like, who can I hit, and then I realized that John was right there, so I just went after him, and I connected. I guess he wishes voted for John Kerry now, huh?”
O’Callaghan has graciously offered to cover half of Davidson’s rent for the next two months while he recovers from surgery. He admits that he may have overreacted a bit but that overall his actions were justified.
“I hope John recovers soon, just like I hope Tom Brady recovers soon,” O’Callaghan said. “If you really think about it, Tom Brady is a lot more important than John Davidson, so I’m not even sure that I did enough to John. But look, I’m Catholic. A knee for a knee, right?”
