CHICAGO — An apparently confused Delmon Young arrived at U.S. Cellular Field convinced that today’s one-game playoff between the White Sox and the Twins will decide the 2008 Major League Baseball champion.

“It’s pretty exciting, no?” Young asked Ron Gardenhire, manager of the Twins, about the game. “One game to decide the whole enchilada. Win or lose, we’ll know how the season ended up after today.”

Gardenhire said he tried to explain to Young that it was actually a one-game playoff to decide the AL Central winner, but Young wouldn’t listen.

“He’s got it in his head that this is it,” Gardenhire said. “So we’re just going to let him play, and then after the game, if we win, I’m going to let Justin Morneau try and talk to him.”

Young is thrilled with the new setup.

“I didn’t even know they switched the format to a one game series, but when I found out I was real excited,” Young said. “It’s like March Madness, only in September instead of March, and with baseball instead of basketball. And, of course, I didn’t go to college.”
