Upton joins basketball league to burn excess energy

TAMPA, FL — B.J. Upton has apparently joined a three-on-three, full court basketball league in order to burn some of his excess energy and stay in shape, SSNN has learned.

“I just really like staying in shape,” Upton told SSNN. “Playing professional baseball in the major leagues is not really helping me with that objective. I am an athlete. I like to have a good body. I need an activity that will allow me to have the sort of physique I’m looking for.”

Upton said he’s been putting on weight steadily since the baseball season started, due largely to extended periods of inactivity and his relative lack of speedy movement while on the baseball field.

“I mean, what do I get to do on the ball field?” Upton asked. “Not much, really. Occasionally I’ll jog about 60 feet here and there. I never run – I can’t even remember the last time that I broke a sweat on a baseball field.”

Upton said that he’s really enjoying the basketball league, though.

“It’s great – we play after games, so I’ve always got plenty of energy,” Upton said. “Andruw Jones is on my team. He’s pretty good, too.”
