NEW YORK, NY — In an effort to protect one of the most valuable arms in their system, the New York Yankees have declared that Joba Chamberlain will be on a strict pitch count of no more than 9 pitches when he returns from the disabled list.
“Yeah, that’s correct, no more than nine pitches per start,” said manager Joe Girardi. “We want Joba to be a starter, and we think he can be a great one, so he’s going to get out there and throw either nine pitches or three innings per start, whichever comes first.”
The Yankees feel that they may have contributed to Chamberlain’s recent arm issues by rushing him into the rotation earlier this year, without letting him fully build up his arm strength. As such, they plan on being particularly careful with him when he returns.

“We’re not just going to limit his pitches during games,” said GM Brian Cashman. “That would be retarded. We’ve got a whole host of things we’re going to do to protect Joba. For example, we’re not going to let him waste a bunch of strength and energy in the bullpen getting all warmed up. Instead, we’re not going to have him throw any warm-ups at all. By doing that, and just coming into the game and gunning it, he’s going to be really fresh for all of his pitches that he makes in the game. All nine of them, or less if we can swing it.”
Additionally, according to Cashman, the Yankees are going to take other measures to protect Chamberlain. Perhaps the most critical of those is a plan to have Phil Hughes carry around a special sling that will keep Chamberlain’s arm suspended in the air whenever he’s not on the mound.
“By keeping the flow of blood out of Joba’s arm at all times when he’s not in a game, we hope to keep it light and loose,” Cashman said. “Also, we are going to make him get a tattoo on his arm that says ‘invincible.’ Sure, he won’t be able to get buried in a Jewish cemetery – but with an invincible arm, who will care?”
The Yankees are pretty sure that their conservative approach with Chamberlain is going to pay some dividends.
“It’s really important that we protect our investment and our future,” said Hank Steinbrenner. “Some day we will be in a pennant race, and we’re going to need Joba to contribute.”
