Guy wearing headphones outside O’Leary home blames cow for fire

CHICAGO, IL — Local concerned citizen Steve Bartman has cracked the case of the fire that tore through the heart of Chicago last week, identifying a cow that happened to kick over a lamp inside a barn as the cause of the blaze.

“Um, yeah, it was the cow… Yeah, that’s right,” said Bartman, 24. “You know, you all are actually sort of lucky that I was here, so I could identify the culprit; otherwise you might go hundreds of years not knowing what really happened.”

According to Bartman, he was sitting in the barn, minding his own business, when the cow came over and knocked over the lamp that he was using to read. Bartman said he attempted to keep the lamp from tipping over, but he dropped it and the fire began.

“It was really weird, too,” Bartman said. “The cow started to flail around, waving its paws and grabbing its head and mooing, almost like he thought it was my fault.”

Bartman pointed out that, being human, he was able to escape the fire, while the cow perished. He was unharmed, the only damage being some singes on the teal turtleneck he was wearing under his black sweatshirt.

When asked why it was he who survived, and not the cow, Bartman was philosophical. “I guess this just means that God has plans for me. Maybe he wants me to do something great, I don’t know. But clearly he has something planned.”
