BEIJING, CHINA — Bob Costas was spotted in an airport gift shop on Monday morning purchasing last-minute souvenirs for his children, whom he apparently forgot about during his month in Beijing.

“I’ve just been so busy covering the ins and outs of the Olympics that I really haven’t had a chance to consume myself with such mundane trivialities as getting presents for my children,” Costas admitted. “I had designs on going to the Great Wall or to one of the many cool markets in Beijing to purchase some gifts for the kids, but I just didn’t have a chance.

“Obviously when I got to the airport, I was like, ‘Fuck, I totally bricked on it’ – I mean, I’m not the kind of self-important schmuck that would come home without presents for my kids, you know? So I went to the souvenir shop.”

Costas said he found some great “Beijing 2008″ t-shirts at the airport, and a couple of decks of playing cards that feature pictures of the ancient city.

“The kids are going to love these,” Costas said. “Especially the t-shirts – I mean, they’ll never know that I didn’t get these at the Olympic village.”

Costas said he hopes to find some wrapping paper or a gift bag upon his return to the United States, so that he does not have to present the gifts in the white plastic bag that the airport gave him. However, if none is available, he has indicated that he’ll just pass them along to his kids in the bag.

“I figure they’re kids, so they’re probably not concerned with the wrapping of the gifts,” Costas said. “After all, with gift-giving, it’s really the thought that counts, right?

“But I don’t really know them that well, so if my wife says wrapping paper is important, I’ll just have to go buy some.”
