Beijing anti-smog plan calls for giant oil-burning torch
BEIJING, CHINA — The intense piece of public policy that is allowing Beijing to drastically reduce its levels of smog in time for the Olympics will come to a head tomorrow, when the key element of the plan will be introduced to the public. “Yes, tomorrow night we will unveil the key to the plan,” said Beijing mayor Guo Jinlong. “We will light a giant, oil-burning torch, and it will spew into the air toxic fumes and gases for a full 20 days.” Jinlong also noted that there was more to the torch than just the emission of gases—it will also use up precious natural resources and set a strong precedent. “Beijing is committed to clean air,” Jinlong said. “That’s what we want to convey. Every time someone looks up and sees the plume of smoke that comes from this torch, they will get a reminder: This is a city with commitment!”
