CLEVELAND, OH – Mere hours after the trade of C.C. Sabathia to the Milwaukee Brewers was reported by ESPN’s Buster Olney, sources within the Cleveland Indians organization say the team was strong-armed into the trade by their former ace.
“Oh, there were a ton of deals on the table for C.C.,” said one high-ranking member of the Indians front office, speaking on condition of anonymity. “The problem is, he kept saying he would only show up if we sent him to Milwaukee. I mean, he doesn’t have a no-trade clause or anything, but he basically just scared away all the other teams.”
Apparently Sabathia has had his heart set on eventually playing in Milwaukee for a long time now. According to members of the pitcher’s entourage, last year’s Cy Young Award winner just feels that Milwaukee is his sort of town.
“He hasn’t put it in these words exactly, but I’m pretty sure it’s the sausage,” said one longtime Sabathia confidant. “I guess it could be the cheese, but C.C. has always been more of a meat-first kinda guy. Not that he won’t be touring the Mars Cheese Castle – I’m just saying I think it’s the quantity and quality of sausage that makes him unwilling to go anywhere else.”
The 6′7″, 290 pound Sabathia has battled weight issues his whole career, but has still compiled a 106-71 record with a 3.83 ERA. He has been the subject of trade rumors all season long after rejecting the Brewers offseason offer of a four-year, $72 million contract extension.
“The Cubs were ready to offer their whole farm system, basically,” SSNN’s Indians source admitted. “But you should have seen the fit C.C. threw about hot dogs versus kielbasa. Hell, I always thought the Chicago-style dog was right up his alley, but it turns out having the tomatoes and the pickles and whatnot is really distracting for him. He really only wants the sausage, and maybe some cheese.
“So he’s a Brewer. And I hope they enjoy it, because by the time he signs his next contract, he’ll probably weigh 700 pounds.”
