BEIJING, CHINA — Gargantuan NBC broadcaster Bob Costas, in China to prepare for the Olympic games, called his Chinese waiter “shorty” on Sunday in what experts are calling Costas’ first-ever opportunity to insult someone smaller than him.
Costas, according to witnesses, was at 5′6″ at least an inch taller than his waiter, and couldn’t pass up this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity.
“We heard Bob saying that the only other time he got to say ’shorty’ was to a jockey,” one witness stated. “It must have been too hard for him to pass up. So when the guy came up to take our order, it was like an avalanche of puns. He ordered the ’short stack’ of pancakes; he ordered the ’shrimp.’ He asked how the weather was down there. It was really annoying.”
The waiter, who spoke almost no English, just smiled at Costas and bowed his head, witnesses said. Costas has already made plans to return to the restaurant and sit in the same waiter’s section, according to restaurant’s owner, Chen Lee.
“Look, I’m really successful,” Costas said. “So it’s not a surprise that the Chinese would look up to me. Whoa! Did you get that pun? Look up to me!”
