Chipper Jones softball team wins first game of season

ATLANTA, GA — Chipper Jones tasted victory for the first time this year Thursday, when the co-ed softball team on which he plays won a 21-18 thriller over their bitter rivals, CornCobbCounty.

Jones’ team, the Fulton County Firesharks, is made up largely of firemen and their wives or girlfriends. Jones has played with the team on and off since 1994, though often his commitments to the Braves curtail his involvement.

“It was great to get a win last night, especially against Triple C,” Jones said. “I hate those guys.”

SSNN has learned that indeed the Firesharks won a game earlier this year, but Jones was out of town and thus unable to participate.

“It was really a great game,” Jones said. “We almost gave it away there in the seventh, but Kevin made a great play on that pop-up to right and it was over.”

Jones was 1-for-3 with an RBI and a run scored, batting out of the seventh spot between Joanie, a receptionist, and her boyfriend Mike. He also played a nearly flawless left-center, recording four putouts with just two errors, one fielding and one throwing.

“Mike can really whack the ball,” Jones said. “I think you can make a case for moving him up in the order.”

Next week’s game is on Tuesday, but Jones will be forced to miss it due to a prior commitment to start at third base for the National League All-Star team.

It’s going to be tough for this sport to sweep any nations, but it’s still pretty frickin’ cool!
