Soriano hoping to buy AT&T Park’s enormous glove

SAN FRANCISCO, CA — Though they sit at just 25-34, thirteen games back of the league-leading Cubs, the San Francisco Giants have something that Chicago’s NL franchise – or, more specifically, Alfonso Soriano – is desperate for.

AT&T Park, home of the San Francisco Giants, is well known for it’s numerous features and pleasing aesthetics – from McCovey Cove’s waters beyond the right field wall to the oversized Coke bottle and baseball glove behind the left field seats.

The glove, which stands approximately 26 feet tall and is a replica of a vintage 1927 four-fingered glove. Soriano has said he would like to purchase the glove, but he doesn’t want it for display purposes, heretofore the only way it has been used – he wants to use the glove in left field.

The high-priced outfielder, formerly of the Yankees, Rangers and Nationals, has struggled mightily in left field for the Cubs this year. He has played poorly both at home and away, but the swirling Wrigley winds are especially detrimental to his chances at cleanly fielding any ball hit in the air.

“That glove, it will help me a great deal,” Soriano said. “I think I will have a greater chance to catch the baseball with a bigger glove. That’s sound logic, right?”

Repeatedly throughout the season Soriano has misplayed balls, either outright dropping them or failing to bring his glove within striking distance of pop flies. The former second baseman seems sure that a new, bigger glove will remedy that situation.

“It’s so big, I don’t need to go real far to catch anything,” Soriano commented when asked about the difficulty of lugging the super-sized glove, which weighs literally thousands of pounds. “Strength has never been a big problem for me, and I think the size of this glove gives me such a wide margin of error for fielding the ball that it will easily make up for the slight loss of speed in tracking down liners.”

Manager Lou Piniella, who has expressed reluctance to pull Soriano late in games for a defensive replacement, welcomes the change.

“Yeah, that glove oughtta help him,” he said. “It certainly can’t hurt. Fonsie is a real good athlete, but he has trouble locating the ball and catching it. Hopefully, this gigantic glove will take care of that.”
