PARIS, FRANCE — Maria Sharapova is known for many things – her tennis game, her beauty… and her mid-swing screaming.

During matches, the Russian is known for yelling and grunting at the top of her lungs when she hits the ball. This had caused consternation among some of the more conservative members of the tennis community, but the matter was mostly ignored.

Until now, that is.

After her most recent match at the French Open in Paris, Sharapova’s voice is being held responsible for shattering the Louvre Pyramid, which – up until Monday – was the large glass structure that many recognized as the symbol of the famous art museum.

The Pyramid, proposed by French President Francois Mitterand in 1983, served as the entrance to the famous museum, with the Louvre’s main lobby sitting immediately below it.

Sharapova, the top seed in the women’s draw, was in the midst of being upset at Roland Garros by 13 seed Dinara Safina on Monday when the world class museum’s glass pyramid broke into innumerable tiny pieces. Miraculously, nobody was seriously injured in the collapse, though there were minor injuries.

However, some of the most famous works of art ever created were affected, according to a museum spokesman. “The Mona Lisa fell down. She fell off the wall and landed upside down, on her head.”

Sharapova’s screams were especially vociferous during Monday’s match, as she bellowed at the top of her lungs in an attempt to get her game going. Sadly, her efforts did not work – except to destroy the nearly 20-year-old Parisian treasure.
