CHICAGO, IL — At his weekly press conference on Wednesday, Bulls chairman Jerry Reinsdorf made some very interesting comments about the team’s personnel on the eve of the NBA Draft.
“Everything’s great here,” he said. “We feel like we’re going to make the right selection tomorrow, and we feel like we’re going to have a legitimately competitive team next year. As soon as we finish our head coaching search – which should be shortly – we’ll be ready to go for next season.”
The comments perplexed reporters in the room, who – like many others – were under the impression that the Bulls head coaching search was finished after the hiring of Vinny Del Negro earlier this month.
“You see, that’s just bad reporting,” Reinsdorf snapped at a group of writers. “Yes, we hired Vinny Del Negro. But that doesn’t mean I’ve found the right head coach. We are still working diligently on finding the perfect coach for this team.”
Reinsdorf went on the explain that while many see nothing but bad coming from the Bulls this past decade, he has been able to use the team’s rare brand on ineptitude to his advantage.
“At this point, nothing would surprise fans,” he said. “I could fire Vinny before he ever coached a game and no one would bat an eye. I could hire Willie Randolph to coach this basketball team, and it wouldn’t even be a top story in the local papers. Our fans have grown to expect that kind of incompetence. In fact, at this point they downright demand it.”
The Bulls chairman added he has “three or four” interviews scheduled this week, and that he expects a decision made sometime next week. He also said the team will not simply release Del Negro if they opt to go in another direction.
“We can always use another shooting guard. That’s one thing we’ve always said – you can never have enough shooting guards.”
