Powe’s production no surprise to friends, teammates

BOSTON, MA — Undoubtedly one of the most surprising parts of the Celtics’ 108-102 victory in Game 2 of the NBA finals was the performance of 24-year-old backup forward Leon Powe.

Powe, in his second season, scored 21 points in only 15 minutes of action on Sunday night. But those close to the Cal-Berkeley product were not surprised at all by his outburst.

“Leon’s always done a lot in a short amount of time,” said childhood friend Joey Peters. “He used to eat his breakfast, lunch and dinner in a span of 5 minutes. It was gross, but impressive.”

His Celtics teammates have also grown used to Powe’s unusual ability to do so much in a short amount of time. Kevin Garnett recalls a time that Powe went through Boston’s practice drills, signed autographs, spoke to the media and showered in only 10 minutes.

Garnett said that the team had considered giving Powe a superhero nickname, but that they have yet to find a worthy super hero. But head coach Doc Rivers says Powe’s ability is both a blessing and a curse.

“It’s absolutely a positive for this team,” Rivers said. “But because Powe gets so much done, he’s started to time travel a little bit. We believe that Leon is currently living in the year 2015, but there’s no way for us to know for sure. And yes – we already asked him, and Obama does win the election.”

Powe’s wife, Marcy, agreed with Rivers that while Leon’s ability comes in handy at times, the two occasionally have problems with it.

“When I ask him to take out the garbage, it’s done before I even finish the sentence,” she said. “He’s really good about stuff like that. But when it comes to things like spending intimate time with each other, it can be a problem. Let’s just say that Leon’s strength is not endurance. I’ll leave it at that.”

It’s going to be tough for this sport to sweep any nations, but it’s still pretty frickin’ cool!
