FLUSHING, NY — In a season full of disappointment, the New York Mets can now at least say they’ve set a few records.
The team set several booing records during yesterday’s doubleheader split with the Texas Rangers at soon-to-be-demolished Shea Stadium. Mets fans set records for most boos in a game, most boos during a doubleheader, loudest boos and most pointless continued booing. Mets first baseman Carlos Delgado also set an individual record for being booed at home, breaking Alex Rodriguez’s record from October 14, 2006.
According to Joe McElvoy of the Elias Sports Bureau, the day full of broken records was unprecedented, and in fact record-breaking in and of itself.
“We’ve never seen so many records broken in one day,” McElvoy told SSNN. “And it was a split – imagine what might have happened if they had lost the second game. But what impressed me most, personally, was the loudest boos record, because there just weren’t that many people here today.”
McElvoy also pointed out that at the pace the Mets are going, they may set season records for booing as well. “The Phillies hold several season records from the mid-80’s, but the Mets are on pace to shatter those numbers.”
Mets GM Omar Minaya said that if the record pace continues, he may think twice about firing manager Willie Randolph.
“Obviously we’re on the verge of doing something very special here in New York,” Minaya told reporters. “Instead of this being just another disappointing season, it can be a record-setting one. I’ll do whatever the fans and the media tell me to do, because I obviously have no idea what I’m doing.”
Most Mets players had little to say about what some may feel is a dubious record, but Delgado did speak briefly with reporters. “Mets fans are the biggest idiots I’ve ever seen. I hit a fucking home run during the first game and they still boo me. What more do they want me to do? They know less about baseball than Canadians.”
