ERIE, PA — Things are a little awkward these days for a pair of friends from Erie’s South Side, following an awkward incident that took place at this weekend’s fantasy draft.
Matt Becker, 31, and Ryan Teeter, 29, former college roommates and co-owners of TheGirlinBlueisEasy, were having a rough go of the draft as they got to the seventh round on Sunday.
“Our situation was rapidly deteriorating,” Becker said. “Our plan had completely fallen apart. We had weak, injury prone pitching, and no real offense to speak of. We had nobody for middle infield. And then we realized: we could solve all our problems with one pick.”
When it came turn for the men to pick, they selected Yunel Escobar, the slugging shortstop for the Braves, and then immediately erupted into an intense celebration.
“It was really weird,” said Jonathan Winters, 24, who observed the celebration. “They selected Escobar, and then they jumped and started pumping their fists and screaming, like they just won the gold medal at the Olympics. Then they sort of went to high-five each other, but it looked more like Ryan wanted to go for like a high-five-hug-type-thing. By the time Matt realized it, they sort of went into this awkward embrace and … well, yeah, let’s just say I’m pretty sure they kissed.”
Becker and Teeter vehemently deny kissing, but multiple witnesses say their approach to the draft immediately became very sullen and awkward. Winters reported that there was no more celebration after any picks, and that when they got Yovani Gallardo in the 15th round, they simply shook hands.
“I didn’t kiss Becks,” Teeter said. “I wouldn’t kiss my friend. I sort of hugged him, and maybe our lips touched each other’s, maybe not. It’s not like we have instant replay. But we certainly didn’t make out. Besides, so what if we did? It was a pretty awesome pick.”
Becker, who is married, was a bit more disturbed by the event. “I haven’t really spoken to Ryan since the draft,” he said. “I thought it would be best to let our team play for a few days before we really talk things over. Maybe let us get a few homers under our belt – that seems to heal all problems, anyway.”
Winters said the whole situation was just unusual and unsettling.
“I mean, Yunel Escobar is good, and all,” Winters said. “But you’re gonna french kiss your best friend over a dude who might have 15 homers? I mean, c’mon – it’s not even a keeper league.”
