SAN ANTONIO, TX — The San Antonio Spurs got a surprise earlier today while preparing for Game 2 of their first round series with the Phoenix Suns.
“We were running 5-on-5 and I’m getting ready to inbound the ball when I see Steve Nash,” Spurs forward Matt Bonner said. “He was wearing Tony Parker’s jersey and everyone else was acting like it was okay, so I passed him the ball and kept on playing.”
Nash was noticeably guarded and acted slightly strange when confronted about the incident.
“What? Steve Nash? Look at the jersey man, I’m Tony Parker,” Nash said. “Nash plays for the team that always loses in this rivalry. Now excuse me while I go make a French rap album.”
SSNN staff psychologist Dr. Nick Riviera said the case is a classic example of ‘If you can’t beat them, join them’ syndrome. Riviera added he often sees this in the NBA.
“Sure, I remember when Larry Bird showed up at Lakers practice in a James Worthy jersey, and more recently there was the time Michael Jordan acted like he was Joe Dumars for a couple of weeks,” Riviera said. “The worst case I ever saw was a couple of years ago when Gary Payton and Karl Malone convinced themselves they were Lakers. It was just sad.”
Riviera said the syndrome affects different players at different levels, but that Nash will probably realize he isn’t Tony Parker sometime before Game 2.
Another issue is the whereabouts of Parker. Riviera said Nash probably killed him and dumped him in the river, but that it’s also possible he is holding him captive.
“Somebody should get this guy Charles Barkley’s phone number,” Riviera said of Nash. “Chuck can tell him how to deal with being a loser. And he’s always good for laugh, too.”
