Indiana residents surprised to learn that model drives racecars

INDIANAPOLIS, IN — Several area residents expressed their surprise when they learned that well-known model Danica Patrick also drives race cars.

“I turned on the TV over the weekend, and there she was – winning some race in Japan,” said Indianapolis native and gas station owner Drake Shores. “I thought she was just a bikini model. I didn’t even know she drove race cars.”

Apparently Patrick has been driving in the Indy Racing League for several seasons. According to the sport’s record books she finished in fourth place in her first Indy 500, but Saturday’s win was her first. Patrick is known to most people as a model, appearing in several national publications – such as FHM and Maxim – as well as endorsing several products in television commercials.

“I saw her in the Sports Illustrated swimsuit edition,” said Anthony Wayne, a self-professed “big sports fan” from Bloomington, Ind. “I said to myself, ‘Hey, there’s that godaddy.com girl.’ I had no idea she also drove race cars, but it’s nice that she’ll have something to fall back on when her looks start to fade.”

When asked about the apparent confusion, Patrick said the reactions were typical of most male sports fans.

“It’s really disgusting,” Patrick fumed to SSNN. “Just because I take my clothes off for money, people think I’m not a serious driver. You know, I was a driver before I was a model. [Ed. Note: No, we did not know that.] Just because it took me fifty races to win doesn’t mean I’m not a good driver – I’m more than just a pretty face.”

Still, while Shores and Wayne were happy that Patrick had found success in another endeavor, they hoped she would stick to her day job.

“These models, they all want to get into acting or singing or whatever,” Wayne said. “They should just stick to what they know. Besides, you can get seriously hurt driving a racecar, and that would be the end of any modeling career. In my opinion, she should stick to her roots.”

It’s going to be tough for this sport to sweep any nations, but it’s still pretty frickin’ cool!
