Fellow golfers recommend months, perhaps years of rest for Woods’ ailing knee

HILTON HEAD, SC — Members of the golf world are unanimous in their undying support for Tiger Woods, after the four-time Masters winner underwent arthroscopic surgery to repair a cartilage problem in his left knee. Without exception, they all wish him a “relatively successful” recovery, and want to make sure the 32-year-old doesn’t rush back to the game too quickly and risk more serious damage.

“In my experience, the best way to recover from this kind of thing is several months of uninterrupted rest,” Angel Cabrera told SSNN. “It wouldn’t be a great idea to stress himself out with something like, oh I don’t know, the 2008 US Open.”

The 2007 US Open champion recommended several months of bed rest for his friend, to take his mind off such weighty, unpleasant matters as upcoming tournaments and rehab workouts. The Argentine star has even taken it upon himself to stand guard outside the Woods home – to prevent the entry of personal trainers, physical therapists or any other potential distractions from Tiger’s steady diet of rest and relaxation.

“Anything for a friend,” he added.

Cabrera’s selfless concern for Woods’ recovery seems to be a typical response among members of the golf world. Since revealing his plans for surgery, Woods has been bombarded with compassionate pleas for a slow, non-rushed recovery; as well as offers of medical advice, ranging from amputation of both legs (to insure he not be bothered with knee problems in the future) to early retirement.

Some have even offered “hands on” assistance for their friend and colleague’s healing process. Geoff Ogilvy, for example, volunteered to perform a second surgical procedure – “you know, to make sure everything went well with the initial operation” – despite having no medical background.

While well aware that such an unskilled attempt at invasive – much less wholly unnecessary – surgery could go horribly awry and render Woods unable to golf again, a smiling Ogilvy was not discouraged.

“That’s a risk I’m willing to take.”
