Cuban loses control, fires self

DALLAS, TX — When he arrived at work on the morning after his Mavericks team’s second straight first-round exit from the NBA playoffs, Mark Cuban was on a rampage – and now he may have inadvertently relinquished control of the franchise.

“It was probably the craziest thing I’ve ever seen,” said one low-level team executive who insisted on anonymity for fear of losing his job. “He started tearing all the pictures off the wall, like from the Finals and stuff. Then he screams at his secretary to ‘get Avery’s ass up here,’ and slams the door to his office.”

Avery, of course, is Mavs head coach Avery Johnson, who was fired by Cuban moments after this exchange. Though Johnson was unable to win a playoff series with Dallas in either of the last two seasons, he did lead the team to the NBA Finals in 2006, and has the highest regular-season winning percentage (.736) in league history for coaches with a minimum of 250 games.

“When the game ended last night, I didn’t really believe that Avery’s job was in danger. But the way Mark was raging this morning, I’m just glad that he didn’t murder Avery,” the executive admitted. “Then he came storming out of his office and fired poor Ellen [his secretary] for taking too long to get Avery there in the first place. After that is when things got really crazy.”

According to several witnesses, the enraged owner happened to catch sight of himself in a mirror as he turned to go back into his office. It was then that his anger turned upon himself.

“I was just starting to pack up my things when I heard Mr. Cuban grumble, ‘and you, you awful jackass’ – so I turned to say something, because I really thought that was going too far. But it turns out he was talking to himself,” said Ellen Rokerstein, Cuban’s former secretary. “Then he says, ‘You’ve completely gone off the deep end in the last couple of years – with your constant whining about officials and tinkering with the team and your ridiculous histrionics at the games. Grow up, why don’t you, you sorry son-of-a-bitch.’ I’ll never forget how he said it, because it’s like he was voicing everything I’ve wanted to tell him for the last two years.”

Cuban reportedly hurled several further insults at himself before angrily tearing the mirror off the wall. After stomping it to smithereens, he pointed at the crumbled pieces and shouted, “You’re fired, Cuban,” before once again retreating into his office.

“Then he comes crashing back through the doors grabbing himself by the color and screaming obscenities,” the executive recounted, wide-eyed. “He kind of jumped-slash-threw himself into the elevator and he was just gone. I kind of still can’t believe it happened. Nobody can get in touch with him, so we don’t really know what the deal is as far as whether or not he’s still running things.”

NBA Commissioner David Stern would not comment specifically on the incident, saying he would withhold any judgment until his office had conducted “a full and thorough investigation into the matter.” But when pressed, he did offer thoughts on Cuban.

“Listen, there are just a lot of legal intricacies that need to be seen to whenever some controversy involving franchise ownership comes to the league’s attention,” Stern told SSNN. “But I can promise you that if there is any chance that Mr. Cuban has forfeited his rights of ownership, I – the league, that is – will dedicate as many resources as are necessary to investigate that possibility. In an utterly fair an balanced manner, of course.”
