MESA, AZ — Spring training means different things to different players. For Chicago Cubs ace zambrano »”>Carlos Zambrano, this year was all about learning the words to his new favorite song.
“Big Z walks around the clubhouse singing that damn song from the Macbook Air commercial all day long,” said Cubs manager Lou Piniella. “He’s getting better, though. He picked up the melody pretty quick, but he was just mumbling or making up his own words for a couple of weeks. At this point, I’d say he’s got 80 to 85 percent of the words down.”
The song, soul »”>New Soul, by Yael Naim, features a catchy, upbeat message, and is being played incessantly on American television. However, it’s not yet clear why Zambrano is so enamored with the song, and it’s caused a division in the clubhouse. Many teammates believe he only likes it because he purchased one of the new computers. Others claim that the two are unrelated, and believe that Zambrano’s growing obsession with Israeli singer-songwriters is the root cause of the interest, as he became interested in it weeks after his purchase.
Zambrano himself gave no clues as to the origins of his fascination with the song.
“It’s just like the chicken and the egg,” he explained. “Which came first? We’ll never know. Now if you’ll excuse me, I’ve got to get the rest of this song down before the end of spring training.”
Piniella said he’s rooting for Zambrano to learn all the words, if for no other reason than to hopefully get the starting pitcher to stop singing the song non-stop.
“The most annoying thing is that he doesn’t even know who sings the song or what it’s called,” Piniella said. “I have no idea how he even got it on his iPod, someone must have done it for him. Carlos is bad with technology. I mean, he loves having the stuff – but he doesn’t do so good as far as using it.”
