ROUND ROCK, TX — Rocco Gill was more than a little worried when he got to his cell phone Sunday afternoon and discovered he had missed seven calls from his long-time friend Brad Jones. Gill had spent most of Easter Sunday with his family and neglected to keep his cell by his side, so he quickly called Jones to make sure everything was okay.
“Brad and I talk somewhat often, you know – at least once a week,” Gill said. “So I was pretty scared when I saw that many missed calls by him. I immediately thought something was wrong.”
Gill wasn’t the only one of Jones’ friends to get a call Sunday, as Jones admits he spent three hours calling just about everyone he knows to brag about his NCAA bracket. Apparently, Jones correctly predicted Davidson’s victory over Georgetown in the second round of the NCAA tournament.
Needless to say, Gill was not thrilled when he found out the reason for the missed calls.
“That’s just ridiculous,” Gill said. “Did Brad tell you he also had Pittsburgh going to the Final Four? He failed to mention that, didn’t he? Look, I’m happy the guy predicted Davidson would get to the Sweet 16, but he didn’t need to blow up my cell bragging about it.”
Many of Jones’ friends had a similar response to Gill, but the individual most critical of his phone shenanigans was his wife, Missy.
“He completely ignored me all afternoon,” Missy explained. “Then he tried to justify it by saying we have unlimited weekend minutes, so it wasn’t costing us anything. I told him it’s not about the phone bill, it’s about our relationship.”
Despite the overwhelmingly negative response, Jones insisted he has no regrets about his actions.
“Anyone who tells you they wouldn’t have done the same thing is a liar,” Jones said. “That win puts me in pretty good position to win my office pool, and that’s a big deal. As for my wife, she’s just pissed because she picked Georgetown to get to the championship game.”
