GREEN BAY, WI — At a surprise press conference this morning, Green Bay Packers quarterback Brett Favre announced he was making a comeback, before announcing his retirement a second time.
“I just feel I need to move on,” Favre initially told reporters almost a week ago at his original retirement press conference. “I’m just tired, that’s all there is to it. It’s been a great run. But the time has come for it to end.”
But Favre seemed considerably cheerier this morning as he told fans and media he would be returning to the Packers after all - “I can still play this game. And we have a fine team for next season.”
Minutes later, though, his mood seemed to darken and he announced his retirement a second time. “It’s gotten to be a job. It’s just too tough to continue being Brett Favre. The expectations are killing me.”
When asked about his immediate plans, Favre seemed confused. In a long, rambling speech, the Packers QB (or not?) said he would be spending time with his family, fishing, and preparing for the upcoming season that he later said he would not be playing in.
“I’m not sure what normal people do on Sundays, to be honest with you,” Favre said. “I’m a little confused, but I’ll figure it out.”
Favre’s announcements left many wondering what the future held. Donald Driver, the senior member of the Packers’ receiving corps, was unsure of what will come next.
“It was great playing with Brett all these years and I’m sad he’s retiring. But at the same time, I’m glad he’s coming back,” Driver told SSNN. “And then I’m also very disappointed that he’s retiring again. What was the question again?”
