ANAHEIM, CA — Only a day after a scare against the Belmont Bruins, Duke head coach Mike Krzyzewski explained his team’s poor performance against the cinderella 15th seed.
“I know a lot of our supporters are worried about Thursday’s game, but we kept it close on purpose,” Coach K told SSNN. “We know how the tournament works - the closer the game, the more TV time we get. And I just love being on TV. Seriously, I can’t get enough.”
Unlike his comments during the post-game press conference, on Friday Coach K gave Belmont absolutely no credit. In fact, he insisted that he made sure the game was within five points for the entire second half.
Oddly enough, not all the Duke players acknowledged Coach K’s “plan.” In fact, senior DeMarcus Nelson said he thought the team was doing everything they could to win by as many points as possible.
“No, I wasn’t trying to keep the game close at all,” Nelson said. “I missed that last free throw because my hands were shaking, not because of some master plan to get more TV coverage. Seriously, my hands shake all the time late in games.”
