Zambrano skipping spring training until he gets a MacBook Air

UNDISCLOSED ARIZONA LOCATION — zambrano »”>Carlos Zambrano is in the best shape of his life, and is looking forward to putting up over 20 wins for the Chicago Cubs. Just not yet.

“Regrettably, I was forced to inform the Cubs that I will not be attending spring training this year until I have been able to purchase a MacBook Air,” Zambrano told SSNN on Wednesday, when the team’s pitchers and catchers were scheduled to report to camp in Mesa, Ariz. “Spring training is about preparing for the season, and once you show up you have to be in an in-season mindset. I simply will not be able to participate in any sort of sporting activity this year until I have my MacBook Air in hand. I ask that the media respect my privacy as I deal with this personal matter.”

Cubs management was not aware of Zambrano’s decision until informed by SSNN. However, they are furious that their superstar hurler will not be making it to camp on time.

“Wait, what now?” asked GM Jim Hendry. “He’s not coming because of a laptop? I’ll buy him the damn computer right now.”

Zambrano just laughed when told about Hendry’s statement.

“See, this just goes to show how clueless the Cubs management is,” Zambrano said. “Frankly, I’m ashamed to even be a part of this organization. And who does Jim Hendry think he is, Steve Jobs? He thinks he’s going to walk out of his office and just buy a MacBook Air? Like it’s a pack of gum, or some human growth hormone? LOL.”

Zambrano, for his part, is trying very hard to get a MacBook Air. He has assembled a list of eight different Apple stores within a half-hour drive from his house, and he is calling them each twice a day – once at 10 am, and once at 3 pm. Thus far, he’s been unable to confirm a location that has one in stock.

“I did find one location the other day that had one, but it was the $3,000 model and I want the cheaper one,” Zambrano said.

Though he signed a five-year, $91.5 million deal last season, Zambrano is well known in the clubhouse and throughout the league for his cost-consciousness when it comes to electronics purchases. The Cubs ace also indicated that he regrets not having ordered the MacBook Air online when it was first released.

“I probably could have had it by now,” he said. “But every day, I convince myself that I’ll be able to get one tomorrow. And so I don’t buy it online, and then it’s one more day that goes away without me having a MacBook Air, and I get even more pissed off.”

In the meantime, the pitcher and his team continue their war of words. The Cubs have threatened to fine him if he doesn’t show up on time, but Zambrano continues pleading for understanding from afar.

“I do not think it’s reasonable of the Cubs to even ask me to show up for work without one of those delightful little machines. Frankly, I’m disgusted that the organization continues to harass me,” Zambrano said. “Can’t they see that I’m hurting enough?”
