MIAMI, FL — The Miami Heat lost their ninth straight game, 99-92 to the Chicago Bulls, on the Thursday before this NBA All-Star Weekend, but Pat Riley isn’t so sure that his team won’t break through and win one in the next week or two.
“I know we haven’t won since we got rid of Shaq, but I think it’s pretty likely that we’ll get at least one of the next six; you know, with Shawn Marion and Marcus Banks starting to get acclimated, and the few days of rest,” Riley told SSNN. “Even when Shaq was on the floor, he wasn’t really giving us anything, so Shawn is a big step up. If you’re asking me can we lose another 15 straight? Yeah, I think so. But will we? I don’t particularly like our chances.”
Shaq was averaging 14.2 points and 7.8 rebounds for the Heat, but had played in only four games between a December 26 loss to Philadelphia and his February 5 trade to Phoenix. Since arriving in Miami, Marion has averaged 20.3 points, 13 rebounds and 3 steals per game, and led the team in rebounding each of the last three; but he has yet to see his squad scratch across a victory.
“There’s always an adjustment period when you make a trade, with any team,” Marion explained. “I think D-Wade and I are starting to find our groove. It’s hard though, when you come to a team in the middle of a streak like this – possibly making history with two 15-gamers. I mean, you don’t necessarily want to be the guy responsible for breaking something like that up.”
Riley emphasized that his team takes the floor with the hope of winning each game they play, but could not deny that getting their names in the record books sticks somewhere in the back of their minds. He also noted that there are other potential concerns at play.
“Let’s be honest – we’re playing for nothing this year, except maybe a draft pick and this little slice of NBA history,” Riley admitted. “I’m out there coaching to win, for sure. It’s not that I’d necessarily be a different coach if we were 42-9 instead of 9-42, but maybe I’d be trying just a little bit harder. Like subconsciously or something.”
Heat superstar Dwyane Wade also has the streak in mind, but he says it won’t affect his play at all.
“I’m not going to lie to you – we’re all conscious of the streak, even the new guys,” Wade said. “But am I going to take plays off? No. If we’re sitting on 14 straight, am I going to sit out the game just because my shoulder is a little sore? Hell no! Because if we do it that way, it won’t count for anything. If we’re gonna go down in history for this thing, I want to know in my heart that we earned it legitimately.”
