Man plans to covertly draft fantasy team on tenth anniversary

ST. PAUL, MN — Local regional sales manager Gerald Powers, 43, is hoping to pull off an unprecedented act of bravado Saturday, as he seeks to draft a fantasy baseball team on the same day as his 10^th wedding anniversary – without his wife finding out.

“Yeah, it’s the big ten-year anny,” Powers said. “An important day in any marriage, my wife keeps saying. Unfortunately it also happens to be the only day for the next six weeks where Joey, one of the other guys in the league, doesn’t have to work. Suffice to say, nobody’s taking much pity for my situation.”

Powers apparently tried to have the draft date changed, unsuccessfully, and then was also shot down viciously when he suggested to his wife Sara that they move their celebration to Sunday, instead of the actual anniversary date of Saturday. That’s when he concocted his plan.

“Necessity is the mother of invention, right?” Powers said. “Well, that maxim is at work here. I don’t wanna get divorced, but I’m not missing the draft, either. I missed it three years ago and somehow ended up with no first baseman – I’m not making that mistake again.”

Gerald’s plan centers around an hour-long bath he intends to prepare for Sara, scheduled for late Saturday afternoon.

“I’m going to draw her a nice, hot bath,” Powers said. “I bought some flowers, bath salts, candles, soothing music and one of those awesome little bath pillows. I’m actually hoping she falls asleep in there. At the very least, maybe she’ll go into some sort of peaceful trance – she’s into yoga and all that crap. That’ll take an hour, an hour and a quarter hopefully. By the time she towels off and gets dressed, we should be into the late rounds, and I can put it on auto-pilot. Everybody wins.”

Sara Powers, as yet unaware of the events planned for the weekend, is tingling with anticipation.

“I am not sure what Gerry has planned for Saturday,” she said. “It’s going to be a surprise. I’m really excited, though. A day without the kids, without sports… Just me and my Gerry, together, the whole day. It’s one of those deals where you just want to be in the same room with the person for the whole day, you know? I love him so much I don’t want to let him out of my sight.”

It’s going to be tough for this sport to sweep any nations, but it’s still pretty frickin’ cool!
