TAMPA, FL — As spring training begins, Derek Jeter is on thin ice with a number of his teammates, who are already annoyed with his new “signature” joke.
“I’ve got this new thing,” Jeter told SSNN. “People say stuff to me, right, and when it’s something that’s annoying or that I don’t want to hear, I just say ‘unsubscribe.’ Like on an email list-serv or something. Awesome!”
Jeter says that the use of ‘unsubscribe’ as a free standing joke was not his invention, but rather came from someone he refers to only as ‘ole TA.’”
“Originally it started out as a thing we did on group emails,” Jeter said. “Like if we’re all sending around emails about what we’re gonna do in Vegas, and Giambi sends out, ‘Let’s go to see Cirque D’Soleil,’ I’d probably just write back and say, ‘Unsubscribe.’ It gets them every time!”
Not everyone is as euphoric about the Yankees’ shortstop’s newfound go-to quip.
“I don’t think it’s that funny,” said Jeter’s double-play mate Robinson Cano. “He says it ALL THE TIME. We’ll be on the field, and I’ll call for a popup, and Jeet wil yell out ‘unsubscribe!’ That shit is confusing, yo. Does that mean that he’s unsubscribing from the popup? Or that he’s unsubscribing from me catching the popup? I know one thing it definitely means -Robinson Cano thinks you’re acting like a douche.”
But Jeter is completely certain the new joke has staying power.
“There’s a lot of things I can do with it,” he said. “It doesn’t always have to be plain old ‘unsubscribe.’ Sometimes it can be ‘unsubscribe me from Dumbass Weekly,’ or something like that. On April Fools, I can yell ‘Subscribe!’ Get it? Because it’s April Fools, so you say ‘Subscribe!’ So you see, I’ve got options.”
