POUGHKEEPSIE, NY — Inspired by Kimbo Slice’s thrilling Saturday night knockout of Tank Abbott, local human resources director James Radville decided to spend the entirety of Tuesday morning watching YouTube clips of Slice beating the crap out of people.
“I hadn’t really ever heard of Kimbo till this past weekend,” said Radville, 43. “But the wife and kids went to bed early, so I was up and just flipping back and forth between Cinemax and Showtime. Lo and behold, there was Kimbo. And I gotta tell you, it didn’t take long for me to fall in love. 43 seconds, to be exact.”
Slice became famous as an internet phenomenon, when a series of online videos showing him wrecking all comers in bloody, gloveless street fights in the back-alleys of Miami gained him national attention. He is now 2-0 since becoming a professional cagefighter.
Danville, who has been with SystemsPro Technologies for five years, is well aware that watching street fighting videos on YouTube is against the company’s rules.
“Yeah, we’re not supposed to use the internet for anything other than work-related stuff, and we’re allowed five minutes per hour to check personal email or something like that,” Radville said. “But here’s how I look at it: my job is to be a representative of the people at this company, and clearly Kimbo Slice is the people’s champion. So in a sense, watching these videos is just a part of my job; the best part, but still just a part. Plus, I don’t smoke, so I feel like I’ve got some extra time coming my way, because the smokers still surf the internet, if you feel me.”
Danville says he’s already chosen a favorite Slice video.
“I like the one where he fights the two guys who weigh over 500 pounds between them,” Danville said. “I think they’re on an airport runway or something. I don’t know, I just think it’s pretty cool. It’s been a long time since I’ve been in a fight on an airport runway.”
Danville also told SSNN that he’s a little annoyed by pundits who argue that Kimbo is not polished enough to be a real mixed martial arts competitor, and that he’s more of a sideshow act. Danville cites the fact that Kimbo has been training with MMA legend Bas Rutten, another YouTube sensation that Danville has recently discovered.
“You said something about Kimbo Slice?” Danville asked, in a mock-Dutch accent. “Now I’m gonna have to break your leg!”
