CHICAGO, IL — Reports out of Chicago late Thursday indicated that White Sox GM Kenny Williams is burning up the phone lines, trying to pry Gio Gonzalez away from the Oakland A’s.
Gonzalez has been on the A’s for less than a day after having been traded by Williams earlier in the day. Thursday morning’s move was the second time Williams has traded Gonzalez away; he also traded for him once, before the 2007 season.
“I was looking for some young pitching, and it turns out the A’s have this young lefty named Gonzalez,” Williams said. “Well, I think this kid is the berries, and we really need some young pitching anyway. Could be a perfect deal!”
It was not clear whether Oakland GM Billy Beane was interested in trading Gonzalez at all. If he were, he’d likely ask for Nick Swisher, Jermaine Dye, Jim Thome or Paul Konerko in a deal. Still, Williams is pressing forward.
“Anyone on our team would be on the table if we can bring Gonzalez to Chicago,” he said. “Sometimes you have to break the bank to get what you want. Plus, if I can get my hands on him, I have some potentially blockbuster offers from other teams, so his worth is virtually inestimable.”
