CHAPEL HILL, NC - In the waning moments of North Carolina’s 93-62 pasting of ACC and in-state rival North Carolina State Wolfpack Saturday afternoon, Tarheels coach Roy Williams was understandably confident yet uncharacteristically blunt when asked how long he thought his Tar Heels team could go undefeated.
“Normally I would not even bat an eye at that question because it has a ‘bad karma’ effect on the team,” Williams admitted. “But when you consider the team we have this year, our current winning streak can’t be measured in victories alone-but years.” UNC’s victory on Saturday was its 17th consecutive to start the season allowing the Tar Heels to presumably retain the number one ranking in the polls for yet another week.
“Seventeen straight wins doesn’t mean squat to me or my players,” Williams said. “I have visions of going 154-0, or something like that. That’s how focused we are right now.” And while the achievement of such lofty a goal implies North Carolina will win some five consecutive national championships, Williams sarcastically defended his prediction.
“No shit, genius. Thanks for the info,” the self-proclaimed coach of the year said with a smirk. “Listen, I know it’s a bold thing to say, but there’s absolutely no reason why we shouldn’t just obliterate UCLA’s record. Who’s going to stop us?”
Legendary coach John Wooden led the Bruins to 88 consecutive wins in the early 70’s, including back-to-back undefeated campaigns. “When it’s all said and done, after this streak is done, people will be looking at that Wooden fella as Roy Williams’ bitch.”
