SAN FRANCISCO, CA — A new and exciting twist has evolved in the saga that is steroid use in Major League Baseball, involving two of its most pertinent personas.
In a dramatic turn of events, now-infamous personal trainers Greg Anderson and Brian McNamee are brothers – separated at birth, only to be reunited by a common, illegal bond. In a statement released Tuesday, Anderson’s lawyer and close friend Paula Canny actively tiptoed around the claim.
“I have grown to know Mr. Anderson very well over the years, and never once has he indicated to me that he has a sibling, nor done anything to create speculation that one may exist,” Canny said. “Now, if you would like to talk about my client’s explicit involvement with Mr. Bonds’ steroid use, I would be more than happy to field any questions regarding that topic.”
Suspicions about the relationship between Anderson and McNamee, both 40, began to arise while Anderson was serving a 90-day term in a Dublin, Calif. correctional institution on money laundering and steroid distribution charges. Anderson still faces further incarceration if he fails to testify in the case against Barry Bonds.
David Horton, a senior security officer at the correctional facility, recalls a man fitting McNamee’s description making frequent visits to see Anderson, sometimes more than three times a week.
“It was like a scene from a movie,” Horton said. “They would sit on opposite sides of the partition and speak on the phone for the entire allotted time. It wasn’t unusual to see them touching hands through the glass, as if they shared a special bond or something. Their time together usually ended in tearful goodbyes.”
McNamee’s repeated trips to the facility undoubtedly were made in an effort to seek advice. McNamee has recently come under fire for admitting to providing Cy Young award-winning hurler Roger Clemens with performance enhancing drugs as early as 1998.
“I can’t comment on the whole steroid issue,” Horton told SSNN. “But what I can say is that whatever special connection they share, it’s definitely not a ‘friend’ thing. It’s more like a brother-to-brother thing. For God sake, they have nicknames – G.A. and B-Mac.”
Neither Anderson nor McNamee would return phone calls placed in an effort to officially confirm the nature of their relationship.
