Valdez: “Imagine how much I would have sucked” without PEDs

MEXICO CITY, MEXICO — When reached for comment regarding his name appearing among a group of steroid users in the Mitchell Report, former major-league starter and reliever Ismael Valdez did not deny using illegal performance-enhancing drugs. “Yeah I used. How else was I supposed to stay in the majors?” Valdez told SSNN from his home in Mexico City. “Listen – my arm basically died at the end of 1999. I never had an ERA under four after that season, and that was WITH the juice. Can you even imagine how much I would have sucked if I hadn’t been on steroids?” According to Valdez, he began using HGH after an undisclosed arm injury in the offseason between 1999 and 2000, when he moved from Los Angeles – where he was a very successful starter – to the Chicago Cubs. After starting 27 or more games for five straight years as a Dodger, Valdez reached that number only twice in the next six seasons, during which he played for six different teams. “I knew what was what, though. When 2005 came around and the testing started getting serious, I got the hell out of dodge. Cuba’s only a hop, skip and a swim away, man. I’m not going down for this – no way.”
