OKLAHOMA CITY, OK — In a press release sent out earlier today, the Seattle Super Sonics announced that they will be relocating to Oklahoma City for the 2008-2009 NBA season, and changing their name to the Oklahoma Sooners.
“The great state of Oklahoma is known as the ‘Sooner State’”, the release explained. “The term Sooners refers to settlers of Oklahoma who jumped the gun, and claimed land before the official Land Run of 1889. This organization feels as though our current Sonics are a lot like those Sooners.
“After all, we will be the first major professional sports franchise to set up shop in Oklahoma, before all of the other pro sports leagues begin to bring teams to this fine state. Thus, the name Sooners fits us perfectly.”
“Well, that is just absurd,” said University of Oklahoma President David Boren when reached for comment. “I mean, I’m obviously thrilled that the Sonics will be bringing their organization to our wonderful state, but let’s be serious: we were here first, and we clearly have squatter’s rights to use the name Sooners.
“As much as they may want to come in to Oklahoma and lay claim to our name, well, they are just jumping the gun. Because again, we were here first. Squatter’s rights!!!”
Though SSNN reporters continued asking questions of President Boren, he simply repeated the phrase “squatter’s rights” until the interview ended.

It’s going to be tough for this sport to sweep any nations, but it’s still pretty frickin’ cool!

David Boren is a fathead who thinks that he owns the name
“Sooner.” Now that is what is really absurd.
He keeps howling “squatters’ rights.” This makes me think
of the fall of 2006, when he was howling about a bad call by a referee and demanding that the OU-Oregon game be deleted from NCAA records.
Boren is out of touch with reality. He is an embarassment to Oklahoma, and deserves to be kicked out of OU.
As a native Oklahoman, I offer my unqualified welcome to the new Sooners.
