LAWRENCE, KS — Kansas football head coach Mark Mangino and his team are headed for a BCS Bowl – specifically the Orange Bowl, against Virginia Tech – and even if they don’t win, they have accomplished remarkable things this year and far exceeded expectations. The Jayhawks were national championship contenders until the end of the season, and Mangino picked up the Associated Press’ Coach of the Year Award and finally moved the Jayhawks football program into the national spotlight after spending decades as an afterthought. But for Kansas head basketball coach Bill Self, that simply isn’t enough. “There comes a time when you have to stop making excuses for your failures and just admit that you can’t win, even though you may have more talent than most programs in the country,” Self said when asked his thoughts on Mangino’s season. “I’m just amazed that year after year this guy gets top recruits from all over the nation and never fulfills his team’s potential. At some point, you just have to win a championship. Not to mention he’s fat.”
