Petrino heads to Arkansas to build program on “commitment and loyalty”

FAYETTEVILLE, AR — Late Tuesday, in a hastily called press conference, Bobby Petrino announced that he is returning to the collegiate coaching ranks, where he intends to build a program at Arkansas based on “commitment and loyalty.”

“We’re talking about character, here,” Petrino told reporters. “That is what college football is all about. It’s about learning the right and wrong way of doing things. It’s about learning how to handle responsibility and have others rely on you.”

Petrino returns to the collegiate ranks after a brief trip to the NFL, where he led the Atlanta Falcons to a 3-10 record over the first 13 games of the season. The announcement of his departure comes approximately 18 hours after getting thrashed by the New Orleans Saints, and with three games remaining on the team’s schedule.

“I just needed to put myself in a position where I could really surround myself with some people who had the right idea about how to do things, and where I could compete against people who know how to go about doing things,” Petrino said. “In the NFL, everyone is so cutthroat. There is no loyalty. I wanted honor. Where better to find that than in the SEC West?”

In the SEC West, Petrino will coach against such loyal and committed coaches as Nick Saban and Houston Nutt.

“These are guys who know about commitment, and sticking to it, and doing things the right way, whatever the price,” Petrino said. “In fact, Nick and Houston and I are thinking about putting together a leadership course for our fellow coaches, to sort of teach them the right way of going about their business. I can tell you that we’ve already received a lot of interest in the course, especially from Les Miles.”

  1. It always amazes me these guys who talk about character, integrity, commitment (p.s. please use “spell check” next time), but the irony is in their actions. Do I teach my kid, who wants to play football, and decides he hates it in the first season “it’s okay to quit before the season is over, Coach Petrino did”.

  2. ummm…houston nutt was at arkansas for 10 years. hardly an eternity, but in today’s coaching world it shows anything but a lack of committment. and for his trouble he had people paying to track his text messaging and flying banners over the stadium to get rid of him, all while averaging close to 8 wins a year. the question is, why the hell would he stay??
