NEW YORK, NY — Thursday’s announcement naming Joe Girardi as the manager of the Yankees was hit or miss for fans of the Bronx Bombers.
“The bum was a .260 hitter when he was here as a player, I aint holdin’ my breath,” said New York cab driver, Vincent Tramuto.
The firing of the beloved Joe Torre has left many Yankee fans hesitant to embrace their new coach – “If you’re gonna get rid of Torre, give us Mattingly. That guy was an icon – Donnie Baseball, ya know?” New York Police Officer Gene Coles told SSNN. “Now they’re bringing in some hack catcher we traded to the Cubs? No thanks!”
Girardi, the 2006 Manager of the Year, played four seasons for the Yankees and is eager to bring New Yorkers their first World Series title since 2000.
“Totally despised him when he was here,” Wall Street stock broker Christopher Lang said. “I can’t think of a more obnoxious, weak-hitting catcher in all of baseball history. I have a hard time not imagining myself booing the hell out of him.”
Girardi thanked his family at the press conference announcing his hiring, and vowed to do his best to keep the Yankee tradition alive. But the overwhelming sentiment among Yankee fans was put best by Father Donovan of St. Matthews on 23rd, who said, “Hope you’re ready for hell, Girardi.”
