Urlacher believes he’s making up for on-field disappointment by “tackling illiteracy”

CHICAGO, IL — Speaking to media on Monday, Bears’ linebacker Brian Urlacher confronted criticism that his aching back has made him ineffective on the field. “I may be a recognized failure on the field this year, but I am making up for it by tackling illiteracy off the field,” the embattled middle linebacker told Chicago media members. “You probably didn’t know, but a lot of people in this country don’t read so good. They say it affects how you talk, too.” Urlacher, who admits he doesn’t read much in his spare time, says that his battle against illiteracy is the one the media should be paying more attention to. “I recently read an issue of Maxim cover to cover to a third grade class. Now if that isn’t commitment to beating illiteracy, I don’t know what is. It’s like illiteracy is the Cardinals, and I’m myself, only last year.”
